Special Thanks for Our Patrons
Dear listeners,
After a long run, we are ending our Patreon funding campaign. But Ottoman History Podcast will continue on.
The Ottoman History Podcast has always maintained low fixed costs, and we believe we are in a position to sustain the project in its current form without the need to gather more donations. This is a difficult decision, as we complete this campaign with dozens of active Patrons on the site pledging a total of $70 each month. Those small contributions add up. Before taxes, we have taken in over $10,000 since 2018. At our current rate of publication, which is closer to monthly than the weekly pace we started with, we do not need the same level of support. While new content comes with costs, it costs us relatively little to keep our old episodes up and running.
Your support has been critical as the Ottoman History Podcast grew and evolved. During the COVID-19 pandemic, donations were especially vital, as they helped us purchase microphones for guests to adapt to the need to record our interviews remotely. Without your support, we would have faced difficult decisions about how to survive in the new podcast ecosystem and maintain superior recording quality. You helped us keep the Ottoman History Podcast free of any need for institutional affiliation or a paywall, just as it will always be. Ottoman History Podcast remains ad-free and published under a Creative Commons license that enables future podcasters — students, scholars, and enthusiasts alike — to sample and remix our content and use it in their own work under a non-commercial license with attribution.
Going over the records, we were overwhelmed by the number of people who donated at some point, about 100 people in total. Some joined as “Fans” at $1 a month. Others were colleagues in the history profession who signed up as “Faculty Patrons” at the recommended level of $3 per month. Some donated at even higher rates. We have had contributors who donated very generous amounts over small periods of time, and a few sustained contributors who donated close to $100, one dollar at a time. We have divided this diverse range of contributors into two groups (listed in no particular order), with special thanks at the bottom to those who were particularly dedicated contributors.
Thank you again for helping us realize the over 500 podcasts that have already appeared on our website as we enter our fifteenth year of production, in addition to many more in the years to come.
With deep gratitude,
